Governor signs bill to limit communities’ freedom to choose clean energy
In Tallahassee, Governor Ron Desantis has signed a bill that prohibits Florida’s counties, special districts, and other municipalities from restricting fuel sources. This bill restricts and may in some cases eliminate the possibility of furthering the use of alternative renewable energy sources in Florida. According to a statement released by Ryann Lynn, Climate and Clean Energy Advocate for Environment Florida, the sunshine state in particular will be greatly affected by this bill, since it will set the state back in its fight against climate change. The possibility to overturn this bill is especially important considering that Florida is already seeing the adverse effects of climate change.
However, Florida is not the only state facing a blockade in the fight to use renewable energy. In 20 other states, large coal and gas companies have backed similar bills that disable counties all across the United States to the rights and accessibility to alternative clean energy sources.
