Birds are Suddenly Dying: What’s causing mysterious illness in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana?
Birds all across the south and Midwest parts of the United States appear to be dying without any explanation. Since May, there have been more than a hundred reports of birds falling mysteriously ill, and many are ultimately unable to recover. The birds who do survive this illness end up with symptoms of neurological issues, including feather loss, blindness, and inability to fly correctly. The primary victims tend to be songbirds such as grackles and blue jays, in the age range of adolescents and babies, according to researchers.
While the specific causes of these illnesses are still unknown, scientists and experts have made a possible link to poor quality maintenance of bird feeders and bird baths. In response, experts at the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources have published information for guidance on how to possibly help these birds. First, and perhaps most importantly, using a 10% bleach solution to clean bird feeders and birdbaths is important to remove bacteria. The guidelines also include information on keeping pets and children away from any sick birds.
